Bicycle Accident

Bicycle Accidents

Bicycle Accidents – according to statistics gathered by the U.S. Department of Transportation, in 2011, 677 bicyclists lost their lives in bicycle versus motor vehicle crashes in the United States.  In fact, deaths involving cyclists account for about 2% of all traffic fatalities.  During the same year, an additional 48,000 bicyclists were injured, and the total cost of bicyclist injury and death is over $4 billion annually.

Statistics also reveal that:

  • 69% of bicycle fatalities occurred in urban areas;
  • 59% of bicycle related fatalities occurred at non-intersections;
  • The highest number of accidents occurred between the hours of 4 p.m. and 7:59 p.m. (30%), while the fewest number of accidents occurred between midnight and 3:59 a.m.

Common Causes of Bicycle Accidents

  • Sometimes, a bicyclist is not visible to a careless motorist, bus or truck driver who tries to make a turn in front of the bicyclist, striking the cyclist in the process;
  • Every so often, cars or motorcyclists try to overtake a cyclists and in the process, they drive the cyclists off the road;
  • Once in a while, a cyclist is struck by an oncoming car, bus or truck at an intersection due to a lack of traffic signal or stop sign;
  • Other causes can be attributed to highway debris, unsafe guardrails, or poor lighting conditions.

How to Be Safer?

  • Bicyclists should always wear properly fitted bicycle helmets.  It is the single most effective way to prevent a head injury;
  • Bicyclists are considered vehicle operators.  So, they are required to obey the same rules of the road as operators of other vehicles.  This means obeying traffic signs, signals, and lane markings. When cycling in the street, cyclists must ride in the same direction as traffic;
  • Bicyclists should increase their visibility by wearing fluorescent or brightly colored clothing during the day, dawn, and dusk.  At night, they should use a front light and a red reflector or flashing rear light, and use retro-reflective tape or markings on equipment or clothing;
  • Motorists need to share the road with bicyclists.  They should allow at least three feet clearance when passing a bicyclist on the road, look for cyclists before opening a car door or pulling out from a parking space, and yield to cyclists at intersections and as directed by traffic signs and signals. They should especially watch for cyclists when making right or left turns.

Despite the statistics, bicycling still remains a healthful, inherently safe activity for tens of millions of people every year.  So, enjoy a day in the sun with your bicycle – just take some extra precautions to be safe.  However, should you ever find yourself in the unfortunate position of sustaining personal injury in a bicycle related accident, please feel free to contact us for a free consultation.  We will educate you as to your options and protect your rights.
